What is Feminine Energy?

Feminine Embodiment Coaching focuses on increasing our connection to and awareness of our feminine energy, but what exactly IS feminine energy? Let’s dig in, because once we do connect to it, it can be life changing- deepening our ability to make decisions aligned with what we truly want, opening us up to pleasure, and helping us better meet ourselves, our selves, our needs, and our joy.

Feminine Energy is not femininity in the traditional sense

Feminine energy is misunderstood.

It has nothing to do with gender, being reserved, or being traditionally feminine in the cultural sense (soft spoken, submissive, dainty). Our culture has a way of creating images of femininity as subservient, taking up less space, falling in line with masculine leadership. We see this in the new trend of Trad Wives on social media who strive for that old-school, women in the home vibe.

Feminine energy has nothing to do with this outward conforming to expected female roles. It’s about polarity. We all have masculine and feminine energetic capacities. There’s a polarity that exists within us all.

At its core, feminine energy is a universal energetic principle. It complements masculine energy, and both are necessary for balance in our inner realm. Understanding feminine energy begins with understanding this polarity — not as competition, but as partnership. We need both energies to be fully ourselves.

Feminine Energy vs. Masculine Energy

In our busy-focused world, we tend to value masculine energy more. We are overscheduled and prioritize getting shit done over slowing down and feeling our needs.

Masculine energy is the doing and go go pushing of our modern world that leads to us feeling burnt out and depleted. Thinking we need to do more is us having a more masculine energy orientation. It also manifests as a focus on structure, logic, action, and protection.

We need to balance this energy with connection to feminine energy. This energy is rooted in the being, the existing, the receiving. It allows what is there to exist without judgement rather than forcing. It listens inward within and trusts our powerful intuition.

Feminine energy is that nurturing power, that creative flow.

Masculine energy tends to move outward. It builds, plans, pushes forward, and protects.

Feminine energy trusts timing rather than controlling outcomes. It is comfortable with flow instead of rigid structure.

Feminine energy is not limited to women, nor is it anti-masculine. It is simply a different mode of operating — one that prioritizes presence, receptivity, and internal alignment.

This internal alignment helps us to heal old wounds as well, because we slow down long enough to connect with them, feel them, and liberate them.

Receptivity: Allowing Instead of Forcing

One of the defining qualities of feminine energy is receptivity. When we are receptive to our inner desires, needs, whole selves, then we stop fighting against ourselves.

We begin to listen and trust our intuition more, which creates an alignment with our authentic, Higher self. We become less driven by external expectations or superficial desires.

Rather than pushing life to happen, it creates space for life to unfold. It recognizes that not everything needs to be forced or optimized. It understands that timing matters and that growth often happens in cycles. We are cyclical beings, and if we are always pushing, we don’t allow our natural cycles to exist. We become depleted which can impact our immune systems and mental and physical health.

This receptivity also shows up as the ability to receive pleasure or help, accept compliments, welcome support, and allow love and abundance in. It means letting life nourish you instead of constantly striving to prove yourself.

I've had to work on allowing myself to receive support and being receptive to pleasure. It doesn’t come naturally to me, but when I am more receptive, I’m able to experience more calm and innate joy.

Intuition and Emotional Intelligence

Intuition is deep knowing within us that is both a result of our ancient nervous systems, chiseled by the generations before us, and also our own life experience. It guides us back to what is helpful for us, aligned with our natural spirit and values.

It doesn’t require external validation and keeps us connected to emotional awareness of how we are feeling. Emotions are not a weakness but rich data about how we are doing. If we can be receptive to our intuitive emotional need, we strengthen healing and self trust.

Intuition values relational sensitivity and supports deeper connection. It is a body-based wisdom that directs us to meet our physical needs, emotional desires, and spiritual cravings.

It is a voice of deep internal love and guidance. Decisions come from internal alignment rather than external pressure. There is less chasing approval and more listening inward.

Creativity and Life Force

Feminine energy is deeply creative and generative. It’s life-giving, birthing ideas and authentic expression. It’s also connected to life force energy — the pulse of creativity that wants to move through you. I like to connect to my inner realm before I write, opening up the feminine energetic channels of being deeply aware of what is within.

But this creative current is not limited to artistic pursuits. It can show up in how you lead, parent, build, heal, or express yourself in relationships. It is an energy of honest expression of our authentic self.

We become more ourselves the more we express through our feminine energy.

Connection to the Body and Cycles

As I mentioned, we are cyclical beings. Another core aspect of feminine energy is honoring this natural rhythm within. Feminine energy recognizes our:

  • Natural cycles

  • Emotional cycles

  • Hormonal cycles

  • Creative cycles

Rather than demanding constant output, it embraces our unique and natural ebbs and flows. When we slow down, allow rest, and listen inward, we may need the rest more than the doing which can make us more balanced in the structure and function of our lives, health, and relationships.

This cyclical awareness stands in contrast to a culture that rewards nonstop productivity. Feminine energy knows we yearn for spaciousness and reflection, and it’s never lazy to rest when we need it. It’s an honoring of self and essential for lifelong renewal.

Embodiment and Expression

I know this all may say abstract, but feminine energy is something we learn to feel and embody over time. It is cultivated the being with. In Feminine Embodiment Coaching sessions, we learn to be with what is there so that we get more comfortable being in our bodies, feeling safe there, and feeling ok with the slowing down.

We can also learn to be in our bodies more without that weight of expectation. This could also be through:

  • Dance and movement

  • Sensual awareness (using our senses)

  • Being present more in nature

  • Dressing in ways that feel expressive

  • Ritual, journaling, meditation

  • Shadow work and emotional healing (like with coaching)

These practices are not about performance, although some people do feel feminine embodiment coaching is “performative” at first. But this is only an indication that we need to get more comfortable with the slowing down and being within!

Once we do this, we can reconnect with the body and reclaim a deeper self love and authenticity.

Archetypes of Feminine Energy

Archetypally, feminine energy has been described through figures like:

  • The Mother (nurturing and compassionate)

  • The Wild Woman (untamed and authentic)

  • The Mystic (intuitive and wise)

  • The Lover (sensual and fully present)

Archetypes are here to help us play with our energy. For example, we can see where in our lives we might be showing up as The Mother and then begin to notice what this feels like. Do we like this? Do we wish we were in this energy more or less? Is there anything we’d like to deepen about this energy?

These are not roles to perform, but energies to explore. I know I’ve really been enjoying allowing myself permission to embody the Wild Woman energy more which has led me to doing improv and being in a show recently. It is a release of inhibitions and allowing of my own innate self to emerge more fully.

What Feminine Energy Is Not

Feminine energy is not a weak or a submissive energy. It is not passivity either. It’s not over-nurturing and disrupting our boundaries, but rather a feeling into what strong boundaries we’d like to set with graciousness. It opens us up to our personal power without aggression.

True feminine energy does not abandon strength — it expresses strength differently.

Feminine Energy Blockers

Modern culture often suppresses feminine energy.

It is diminished by the hustle mentality I’ve seen embodied in so many of my clients. We internalize the need to be productive to be worthy, and we try to be strong by pushing through our emotions, repressing them. There is cultural mandate almost to fear vulnerability, but this acts as a feminine energy blocker.

We must be vulnerable to access what is there, waiting to be felt and liberated and expressed. Emotional intelligence can be unburied then, and we can begin to connect more deeply to ourselves and others. We become more ourselves.

Healing the feminine involves releasing shame with us, healing the inner child, feeling and decreasing judgement of our emotions and sensuality, reclaiming intuitive wisdom, and letting go of hyper-masculine overdrive.

The Essence of Feminine Energy

To summarize the essence of feminine energy, it's:

  • Being over constant doing

  • Trust over control

  • Flow over force

  • Intuition over external approval

  • Creativity over rigid structure

  • Receiving over striving

  • Cycles over linear productivity

Feminine energy invites us to slow down, listen inward, feel deeply, and express authentically. It reconnects us with our body, rhythms, and creative life force.

It is not about becoming someone new. It is about remembering what was always there, honoring and welcoming it all, and accepting all parts of us, our needs, and our desires.
